It’s been a while since I read The Orphan’s Tales, so I’d forgotten how good Valente is at playing with stories and story structure and archetypes. There’s so much to unpack here: how the book comments on the traditional Snow White story, the racial issues (Snow White is half-Crow, and her name is given to her mockingly by her stepmother), the theme of parents and children, the use of the Western setting. I love the folktale allusions in the chapter titles, and the vivid imagery. Just all-around brilliant.
